In the fall, 3rd grade studies the life, art, and literature of African American artist Faith Ringgold. We read Faith Ringgold’s Caldecott winning book Tar Beach.  Then we write our own stories of where we would go if we could fly and illustrate them to create a story quilt.

    Hello everybody, my name is Christina H. I am 8 years old and in the third grade. It is my first time to fly. Tonight I will fly to Fairyland but before I do that I must close my eyes and think really hard of where I want to go and then ...POOF! I’m there that’s what I did tonight. Right now I am flying right over Fairyland. I see all these little people with wings flying around, they are fairies. It’s my first time I’ve ever been to Fairyland. It is so magical. I land and explain to the fairies who I am. Next I get to  meet the King and Queen Queen Titania and King Oreban. I find that all the fairies live in toadstool houses! I play with all the fairies and we have flying contests and I win! It is so much fun I forget what time it is. What did you say 5 o’clock! I better get ready for school or else I might be late. I close my eyes and imagine I am in my nice cozy bed. Then I’m there I crawl in my bed get comfortable and I get to sleep immediately.

        Hi, my name is Hallie. I am eight years old. I have been flying since I was seven years old. All I have to do is close my eyes and I’m there. I am going to Pluto. Today I will see all the planets. Wow, out I go. I am there. I see Pluto! I never thought I would see Pluto. I circled around it. Time to go home I hear my dad waking up. Thanks for flying with me.

    Hi my name is Hannah. I am in third grade. Guess what? I can fly. I have been flying for months, I tell ya. Guess what I have to do. Jump out  of a window  and I’m flying. Tonight I’m going to Disney land. I’m going to play with Lilo and Stitch. I will ride all the rides, every ride in the park. I love to fly. I’m going to fly with Tinker Bell. It will be a lot of fun. I will have ice cream and ride the Pirates of the Caribbean. I’ll ride Space Mountain and the many adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Oh it’s time to go. I hope my little brother didn’t close the window like last Sunday. Oh that's good he didn’t. Well, good bye.

     Hi my name is kate, I am 8 and in the third grade. I love to fly , I’ve been all over the world expect Australia. I learned to fly when I made a magic powder in science class and put it in my hair then I could fly. Now I buy the same magic powder from a shop in the clouds. When ever i’m low I use the last to get to the clouds to get some. Tonight I’m flying to Australia to see the kangaroos and koalas.    

    Man it’s hot in Austraila.Oooohhhhh the koalas are sooo cute! One’s even getting  my back for a piggy back ride!!! I’m flying around Australia with a koala on my back!Oh no here come the dingoes, better fly up a tree. Good it’s safe now, I’ll have a hopping contest with the baby kangaroos called Joey's. Oh man It’s time to go, I hope I have enough magic powder to get home. I hope mom didn’t close the window because there was a draft coming inI hated that. Good she didn’t, I’m finally asleep in my own soft bed.

Most people don’t, so you’re lucky I’m telling you this.I want to fly to a cloud because I like to see the birds.I can talk to them and sometimes I even fly with them. Look!It’s the sun. better get going but first let me free fall.I love to free fall. You let your self fall and then fly. Ahhhhh! I’m falling woosh. Got to go bye.

    Hi, my name is Kendall. I am 8 years old. I live in Austin, Texas. One night I wanted to fly. So I closed my eyes and in a second I was flying. Wow! I didn’t know I could fly. I wanted to go to Maui. In the sky I was freezing. In a second I saw Maui. I saw a land area where I could land. It was so when I got there. I saw people dancing, playing on the beach, surfing, swimming, and tanning. I wanted to see the crabs. Crabs are so cute!!!!! The biggest crab 1 inch. I went and made a sand castle. It took a long time. I looked at my watch. It was 4:00 a.m. I needed to get home. Bye!!!!! I closed my eyes and I was flying. It was so cold! Finally I was home and everybody was still asleep. I went in through my window and went to bed.

    Hi, my name is Megan. I am 8 years old. I am in 3rd grade. I know how to fly! I have a pixy, and when she sprinkles fairy dust on me, I can fly! Today im going to candy land to play with the ginger bread men. My family are the only ones that know I have a pixy. So I ask my pixy for fairy dust, then I close my eyes and I can fly! I can see the cotton candy clouds. There’s the ginger bread men I better land. I ask what we’re going to do today, and they say where going to have a marshmallow fight! I take some marshmallows and I throw some,and bullseye! I hit them. Oh no its going to rain gum drops! I better get  cover. Good it stopped raining. wait what time is it? Its 5:00. I better go home. I will gather up some ice cream and go. Ok pixy,can I have some fairy dust, thank you. Here we go, Up Up Up. and go! Bye, bye ginger bread men! I feel the nice breeze. I think I smell my moms chicken. Mmmmmm. Here we go down, down, down, down. I go through the window, and I land in my bed. I hop down stairs. Im just in time to eat diner. I love chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Mmmmmm! Delicious its time for ice cream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A I also brought whip cream! Yummy.

    Hi! My name is Nicky. I’m 9 years old and I can fly! My parents don’t know I can fly. Today I will go to Australia. I open the window and jump. Wwwwwooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooossssssssssshhhhh!!! Whoa!! I almost ran into a telephone pole!!! I better fly higher.  3 minutes later... Yay!! I’m there!! !! I see my friends!! My sugar glider, koala, and kangaroo. We'll play together. I can bounce with my kangaroo. I can also glide with my sugar glider. Now I’ll climb with my koala. That was tiring. Oh no!! It’s time for bed!! Oh no!! My window is closed!! I guess I’ll go down the chimney. Bye!!

    Hi! My name is Sophia but some people call me Sophie. I am 8 but I wish I could be 10. This is my 10th time flying. I learned to fly when I was just four but now the story will be much better. Right now I am in bed and I am going to Art Land. Right now I am going to open the window and close my eyes. And I am going to say Art Land Art Land I really want to go to Art Land. So as fast as I know  I am flying. Up next to the moon I see Art Land. This is so cool! I think I can come here next time. I’m hungry. Where can I find a food stand around here? Lets see. Let me look at the arrows to see where some food is. There it is. It’s next to the slippery paint slide. I wonder what there is to eat. Let's see. Paint balls and paintbrush noodles,And Vanilla soda. I just want to try it. Here it goes. YUMMY! I did not know this would taste good. I want to go and try out one of the rides right now. I am going to the slippery paint slide. WWHHEEEEEEEEE! That was so cool! I think I need to get home before my sister closes my window. Now I am going to close my eyes and say take me home where my soft blankets are take me home.
